The treasure that Corylus carries for the
returning King Arthur is a staff. A tall wand of white hazel was used by Merlin
the magician, and hazel staves have also been carried by pilgrims down the ages
to give strength on a journey. The runes associated with Corylus signify Coll - the ninth consonant in the Ogham Tree Alphabet, and a spring month in the Celtic tree calendar, when the hazel groves grow thick and green. Hazelnuts are a concentrated source of nourishment for woodland creatures - you can see here a squirrel gathering the food he needs to survive the winter. It was the hazel's reputation as the tree of knowledge and wisdom that gave rise to the belief that all essential knowledge could be concentrated, short and sweet, "in a nutshell" as the saying goes. |
