Fainia's name draws upon the the word 'fain' meaning glad or joyful, to delight in... She delights in the shells which cluster along Gramarye's southern shore. But her name also has overtones of 'feign' - to pretend - for Fainia is jealous of her treasures and lures humans away from them with her illusions of storms and rocks. In this way, she keeps shells safe until they can reveal their secret - the lustrous pearls with which the children of the faeries play. Fainia sometimes gives the
pearls to mermaids to adorn their hair, in exchange for shells from other oceans.
Fainia's wings shimmer with the blue and green of the rock pools where she lives, and the hidden treasure she brings with her in her keepsake box is the scallop shell of pilgrims.
